June 4-Nature presented myriad gifts today: four deer stood in the road at the intersection of Traverse and Oak; a killdeer ran along the shoreline at the Dam Beach; an eagle sat on the beach where the river empties into the bay. (Terri Reisig) Week of June 5th: Porcupines are more active, but are less destructive on trees around this time. They switch their diet from feeding on mostly tree bark to include leaves, fruits and grasses. They mostly love to eat Basswood leaves. Killdeer are also nesting around this time of year. They make their nests in sandy, rocky soil. Their eggs resemble white rocks with brown and black spots on them. If you encounter one, the mother will pretend to have a broken wing, to entice you to follow her, rather than her nest. Killdeer babies are born ready to run. (Lauren Dake) June 8-The beach clean-up team collected a lot of debris from Inner harbor elk river. (Christine Petersen) June 12-Animal sightings in Bay Breeze over the past 3 weeks on the land between Bay Breeze and the Sands-a family of minks crossing the road to fish at the dam-a yearling-a doe and two fawns-a porcupine-a big possum.
